King Charles Formally Strips Prince Andrew of HRH Style and Princely Dignity
In a decisive action, King Charles has officially removed the former Duke of York of his Royal Highness attribute and his princely title.
These alterations were made official by issuing letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm, which were published in the Gazette.
The official notice declared: “His Majesty has been graciously inclined by letters patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall cease to be entitled to hold and enjoy the designation of ‘Royal Highness’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince’.”
A separate record affirmed the removal of the Duke of York from the roll of peerage, with immediate effect.
The notice stated: “The king has been pleased by royal warrant under his signature dated 30 October 2025 to instruct his government minister to cause the Duke of York to be struck from the roll of the peerage.”
Context of the Decision
The decision follows mounting scrutiny over Andrew's links to the late financier Jeffrey Epstein, exacerbated by the posthumous publication of Virginia Giuffre's memoir.
The author alleged that she was sexually abused by the former prince after being trafficked by Jeffrey Epstein, allegations that Mountbatten Windsor has always denied.
Mechanism of Removing Titles
Charles employed his monarchical powers—recognized rights held by the sovereign—following discussions with Cabinet Office officials, rather than through parliamentary means.
Royal instruments and warrants are instruments of this prerogative, used to grant or remove honors and styles.
Because the HRH style is granted by letters patent, it can be withdrawn through the same instrument.
Further Actions and Support
After the initial announcement, the lord chancellor was instructed to prepare the necessary documents for the title removals.
The decision also involves Mountbatten Windsor relinquishing his lease on his Windsor residence, a thirty-room Crown Estate property where he has lived for two decades.
Officials endorsed the king's move.
Retained Honor
In spite of the stripping of honors, it was confirmed that Mountbatten Windsor will retain his Falklands service medal, awarded for his role as a helicopter co-pilot during the Falklands conflict.
