The Tooth Fairy Story Film Analysis: Cartoon Journey with a Sprinkling of Kid-Appropriate Preteen Romance
Throughout this cartoon journey for preteens, the fairy community focuses on collecting teeth from sleeping youngsters and leaving gold under their pillows. Board-riding teenage rebel fairy Van (brought to life by Booboo Stewart) is less than thrilled about spending his future to collecting baby teeth—a feeling that’s entirely reasonable. He is just slightly more interested in the financial workings of the situation: the fairies deliver the teeth to mysterious goblins, who supply gold in exchange. However, Van’s interest grows when he spots a goblin (voiced by Larkin Bell), who proves to be not at all the hideous creature he had imagined.
An Unlikely Bond and Shared Threat
The stage is set for an adventure with a light sprinkling of young love (even though it remains perfectly appropriate for children). The goblin and fairy communities are separated from one another, and there’s nothing like the thrill of the forbidden to bring people as one. The two species portrayed in the film are remarkably alike, yet each holds prejudiced beliefs about the opposite side. Fairies are supposed to be self-centered sorts, given to stealing anything they want, while the goblins are reportedly stupid, foul-smelling, and backward, but are actually bright and technologically advanced.
Naturally, this scenario requires a shared foe to join forces against, and this is duly provided by a group of vicious spiders, voiced by Jon Lovitz and Fran Drescher. They make no secret with these guys: they aim to devour the goblins and fairies, and they serve as quite savage, if not particularly skilled, villains.
Ideal Viewers and Final Thoughts
You won’t find very many animated films aimed at the kind of audience that is starting to experience first crushes, but are not mature enough for the content teenagers are watching in lieu of popular teen sagas. Should your youngster is in the right age bracket, this is unlikely to be their next favorite movie, but it’s a decent choice.
The Tooth Fairy Story releases in Scottish cinemas starting October 10 and across the United Kingdom from 24 October.
